Michael Hyatt believes in order to be heard in this noisy world, where competition has never been greater and people are more distracted, you must build a platform.
What is a platform? Hyatt explains, “Very simply, a platform is the thing you have to stand on to get heard … It might include your company website, a blog, your Twitter and Facebook accounts, an online video show, or a podcast.” All of these different avenues provide visibility, amplification and connection for your product, service or cause.
Outline of the Book
The Honest Assessment
The Good: When I first read this book I was just getting into blogging and building my platform. It was packed with information that I needed to hear as a young blogger. It helped me understand how to build a platform through blogging and social media. The chapters were small, but were easy to follow and replicate on my own blog.
Part 3: Building Your Home Base was worth the price of the book for me. I never realized how important it would be to build a solid home base for my platform. This section is one that I come back to every couple of months to refresh or get other ideas for updating my website.
The Bad: It has been a few years since the book has been published and there are a few things that frustrate me about this book. First, there are a lot of chapters discussing Twitter and other technologies. Technology is changing so fast that many chapters of this book will not make since in a few years. Even now, some of the information about twitter is outdated.
Secondly, a lot of the information used was reworked from the material on his blog. It is not wrong to do this, it is actually helpful to have it all in one place. However, I have been following Hyatt for many years and much of this type of information I had read on his blog.
So, who is the book for?
If you are an expert blogger and have a booming platform, this book is not for you. You would probably do better reading something more specific on marketing.
I would commend this book to bloggers and people who are beginners to building a platform. It will give a good platform for starting the process of building your brand. It will help you on the journey to building a successful platform. Buy it, read it and reread it.
